MYL LAX NEWS

IMPORTANT CORONA VIRUS UPDATE: 03-26-2020

March 26, 2020

McLean Youth Lacrosse (MYL) Families,

It is with tremendous disappointment that we announce our 2020 spring season has been cancelled in its entirety.  We all understand why this drastic measure is necessary, but we are disappointed!

Cancelled / Closed. Our Spring parent league, Northern Virginia Youth Lacrosse League (NVYLL), has officially cancelled the 2020 spring season.  Please see their email below.  Fairfax County and the Commonwealth of Virginia have closed the vast majority of fields and Parks.  So our hands are tied.

Credit/Refunds.  We will need some additional time to determine how to properly wind down the season and develop a fair and effective Credit/Refund policy for everyone. We are hoping to issue Credits (preferred over credit card refunds) on all Spring Registration Accounts to go toward Summer Box Lacrosse or Camps and or Fall Box Lacrosse or Clinics.

We hope to have all options to offer to you soon. The goal is to Credit/Refund as much as we possibly can, as soon as we can.  We have a few variables in play, however.  These include:

  1. Field Use Fees - We are not sure if Fairfax County is waiving all spring field permit user fees or not.
  2. NVYLL Fees - Our parent league has set expenses and may be charging each member club some fees this spring.
  3. Equipment / Jerseys / Insurance - We ordered and paid for equipment and jerseys & need to purchase Insurance going forward.
  4. Refund processing expenses - If we credit credit cards, there is a transaction & admin fee for each refund we process.

Please bear with us a little bit longer.  We are committed to getting Credits/Refunds out as soon as possible. And we are trying to be sure MYL is viable going forward.  These are crazy times for sure!!

Going forward.  Please keep those sticks in your hands!  Get outside.  Enjoy the sunshine and exercise while at home.  Throw the ball around with your siblings, parents, friends - at a safe distance, of course.  Remember, all fields at all schools and Parks are officially closes so please stay close to home. If you are the only lacrosse player in the house, find a safe brick wall to throw against.

Stay Connected. Please visit our mylax.net website for announcements and updates.

Summer & Fall.  We hope we are back on the fields this summer (June-July) with our Summer Box League again and a Summer Camp for all boys and girls. We are also planning for our Fall Box League (Sept-Oct) along with Fall Clinics.

Please let me know any questions and stay safe, take care!

Keep Shooting,

Bucky Morris

NVYLL CORONAVIRUS UPDATE (Please forward to NVYLL families…)

Dear Commissioners and Families:

At the meeting of the NVYLL Executive Committee last night, we decided to cancel the remainder of the 2020 Spring Season.   Governor Northam ordered all schools and other community facilities closed for the remainder of the academic year, which means we will have no fields.   This is heartbreaking after so many of you spent months of volunteer work preparing for the season, and the boys and girls have been looking forward to it.   But we are left with no choice.

We are taking immediate steps to limit NVYLL’s financial obligations so that we can return the maximum amount of member club payments that we can.   We expect to be able to make significant refunds to clubs based on the fact that we will not incur any variable expenses such as officiating fees, trophies, etc.  Please bear with us as we approach this in a responsible way and make sure that our fixed costs are met so that we can be secure for next season.

Also note that, in order to get any refund, a club must have all rosters uploaded as well as submitted to   in the format that was previously requested, along with both boys & girls player counts.  Even though it may seem pointless to do so, it will be necessary for us to have a current season team/player count for insurance and dues purposes in the Fall.

We are also suspending NVYLL’s insurance, effective April 9.   We will resume it prior to tryouts for next season after a review of our policies, coverage, and member club needs.   In the meantime, this means there are NO NVYLL-SANCTIONED ACTIVITIES UNTIL NEXT SEASON.   If member clubs, coaches or players engage in lacrosse activity prior to tryouts for the 2021 NVYLL season, this will not be pursuant to any sanctioned NVYLL activity and therefore it will not be covered by NVYLL insurance.   Clubs, coaches and players always have the option of self-insuring through US Lacrosse membership or by procuring your own coverage separate from NVYLL, for summer and fall lacrosse.  Please plan accordingly if you expect to have lacrosse activity prior to the 2021 season.

Thanks again to the club commissioners, Executive Committee members, Executive Administrator, and Officials for all of the work that you put into this season.   It is tremendously disappointing to have to cancel the season but the safety of our lacrosse and broader community is more important.

Sincerely,

Jeff Grimson

Chair, NVYLL

IMPORTANT CORONA VIRUS UPDATE: 03-25-2020

March 25th, 2020

McLean Youth Lacrosse Families,

We hope everyone is well!

As of right now we have not completely cancelled the Spring Youth Lacrosse season yet, we hope to have more info soon in the coming weeks. VA High School (VHSL) Spring sports are now waiting till May to see if they can play their High School Spring sports in the month of May-June if all goes well.

This is a very unique situation we are in and we are hoping normalcy will return in April/May and we can start using the High School & County fields for practices and games. We will do our best to keep things going in May into June for all youth age groups and or into the Summer and the Fall season if needed. We do run Summer & Fall Box Leagues and Summer Camps and Fall Clinics so lots of Lacrosse left this year!

Right now we are not planning to refund monies as we have incurred decent expenses in order to plan for our Spring season and will use the registration payments as credits toward the remaining Spring season if it happens, and or Summer, and or Fall Clinics and Leagues.

Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks for your patience. Please look for more updates on our mylax.net website in the coming weeks.

Please remember to practice social distancing and try to workout/exercise while at home, please stay safe and take care!

Keep Shooting,

HOME WORKOUTS WITH EP!!

HOME WORKOUTS

Mclean Youth Lacrosse is partnering with Explosive Performance (EP) to offer online strength and conditioning to our student athletes.  EP trains 3000 athletes per month from youth to professional athletes, including 32 Olympians and hundreds of professional athletes.

This is a unique situation, where athletes do not have the support of their athletic training staff, coaches, and teammates.  MYL will be able to offer online virtual training from EP using the Train Heroic app.  Coaches and athletes can use this service for FREE as a courtesy from EP.

We can't control our circumstances, but we can control how we respond to them.

Our athletes deserve the ability to prepare for the eventual start of their next competitive season.  Here are instructions on how to access the app and our MYS community:
  1. Click HERE to download the Train Heroic app.
  2. Create your account with email and password.
  3. Input the code "MYLEP" in the access code box to join our team and see your daily programming, including power, speed, strength, conditioning
*There are screenshots at the bottom of this email to assist you.
**Coaches may join in the same way to interact with their athletes.
If you are interested in a more customized training program for your goals, please contact Director Avatus Stone ,

"We are honored to support MYL athletes in collaboration with  Bucky Morris.  Our hope is that we can support you in your athletic goals, and more importantly reinforce the life skills of resiliency and grit.  Stay safe and healthy in this unprecedented time."

MYL Spring 2020 Season - Corona Virus Update!!

March 12th, 2020

McLean Youth Lacrosse Families,

Effective immediately, Thursday, March 12th, McLean Youth Lacrosse (MYL) will suspend our Spring 2020 season until April 12th, 2020. Thus, cancelling the first 3 games of the season.  We will target April 13-17 to resume practices and April 18-19 to resume games, pending further information as this situation develops.

All scheduled activities; practices, scrimmages, clinics, meetings, and games during this time from now till April 12th are cancelled. This is due to the recent developments of the COVID-19 Virus and the World Health Organization (WHO) designating COVID-19 as a pandemic.

Fairfax County Schools (FCPS) have cancelled all sports activities starting Saturday, March 14th until April 12th, 2020. All Fairfax County School fields and Park Authority fields are closed until April 12th as well. We are hoping to resume practices after April 12th with games starting April 18-19 weekend. This delay spans all school systems’ Spring Break which amounts to a 5-week delay.   If we are able to resume games April 18-19 weekend, there would be 5 regular season games left, not including post-season play for most age-groups or added weekends for the younger age-groups.  If we are able to resume practices at an earlier date, we will inform you as soon as possible.

This is a tough time for all, but the health, safety, and well-being of our Lacrosse families is our greatest concern.

Please look for an update in two weeks as we may have more guidance on the possibility of a return to play, hopefully.

Given the recommended guidelines of social distancing, we discourage parents and players from organizing small group sessions with teammates during this period.

We will keep everyone updated with posts on mylax.net with all new developments and will re-evaluate the season shortly. Please let me know any questions or concerns, thanks.

Keep Shooting,

Bucky Morris

2027/2028 Tryouts are 2-4pm, 1 February 2020, McLean High School.

.

There are a limited number of slots available, as we want to keep teams at a

manageable size so the boys get adequate playing time.

All players must register for tryouts through the MYL website.

Wildcard Lacrosse is a new youth lacrosse program based out of McLean Youth Lacrosse.

Mission: Provide young athletes an affordable opportunity to play high level lacrosse and other sports throughout the year in order to reduce player burn-out and injuries.

Goal: Build cohesive youth lacrosse teams at a young age in order to compete together now and throughout high school.

Preparation for a Possible Future.  Putting the team together now, allows us to prepare for high school tournaments, get to know parents, and coalesce as a team.  My intent is that this team will stay together through high school in summer tournaments while still playing on your respective HS teams.

Player Commitment:

In the Summer, Fall and Winter, players are encouraged to play lacrosse and another sport.

In the Spring, players will compete in Wildcards Lacrosse or your local recreation youth lacrosse club.

Concept.  The Wildcards will compete in four semi- local tournaments a year which do not conflict with the Northern Virginia Youth Lacrosse League and provide tremendous flexibility to participate in other sports.  We will have optional practices throughout the year.  Your Wildcard team will compete in tournaments at the A/UB team.

Your player will attend as many of the Wildcard practices as possible in the Fall, Winter and Summer when they don’t have a conflict with their other sports.

Division I Head Coach Perspective on Multi-Sport Athletes.

**Chris Bates, Princeton- "These guys have a high level of athleticism but probably haven’t peaked yet as lacrosse players. Once they get to college, they will specialize and will develop and blossom. They usually have a steep growth curve, whereas some of the kids who have been single-sport athletes tend to burn out quicker. Oftentimes, they don’t have as much left in the tank.”

**Matt Kerwick, Cornell-  “Don’t think your kid is missing out by not playing lacrosse all year long.  As coaches, we’d rather see them competing in multiple sports. There’s a lot more benefit to that than in having a lacrosse stick in your hand year-round. College coaches are more interested in the intangibles.”

Playing time.   You are paying to be a part of the Wildcards, enjoy lacrosse and have fun.  As a result, teams will be tailored to ensure near equal playing time during tournaments.  The last thing you want is to travel and not see your player compete.  During games, our mission is to win, our goal is to play equally.

Team Composition.  4 Attack, 6-8 Middies, 5 Defense/LSM, 1-2 Goalies. Total 16-19 players.  Some travel clubs have 25-30 players. My goal is make sure our committed players get the maximum amount of playing time and game experience at a high level.  Traveling to Hershey, PA and only seeing your son play 4 minutes is NOT the plan.  Minimum players with maximum playing time!

Possible Tournaments.

Rumble in Richmond: 2-3 Nov, Richmond, VA

Madlax Spring Madness: 15 March, Bethesda/Potomac MD

Spring Thaw: 14 or 15 Mar, Frederica, DE,

Hogan's Summer Exposure: 13-14 June, Annapolis, MD
