The MYL Boys Lacrosse Program
McLean Youth Lacrosse serves all boys living within the McLean High & Langley High School Districts ages 5-14, mainly zipcodes in 22101, 22102, 22043, 22046, & 22066. You must live in Northern Virginia to play in the Spring League (NVYLL).
Please go to this website: http://boundary.fcps.edu/boundary/ to find out which public High School District you live in. You must enter your public high school where you reside when you register online for the Spring 2020 Season. You don't necessarily have to plan to go to McLean HS or Langley HS, but if you live within these two public high school boundaries then you can play with McLean Youth Lacrosse.
All other players living outside these two public high school districts are highly encouraged to play youth lacrosse in your local public high school district youth program where you live. You may incur higher registration fees if you play with McLean Youth Lacrosse in order to help off-set higher Fairfax County User Fees for non-county residents that use county fields in McLean.
In the 2022 Spring Season, we will participate in the Northern Virginia Youth Lacrosse League (NVYLL) in boys 10U, 12U, & 14U divisions. We will also potentially send Boys teams at 10U, 12U, and 14U to play in addition to NVYLL games, teams in the Metro League with Bethesda Lacrosse Club and others, more details soon. Boys 8U & 10UB will play Box Lacrosse as part of the NVYLL Flex Program and will play other 8U & 10UB teams from Northern Virginia and potentially Bethesda. If we can field a 10UA level team then that team would still go full field and not in the Box. No high school players, or anyone playing high school lacrosse, can play in the NVYLL league unless 14 yrs old and not playing in high school. We will also offer a 6U boys (5&6 yr olds) division that will practice only on 6-7 Saturdays in the spring and we will schedule several Saturday scrimmages for this new age-group.
6U Boys & Girls (5&6 yr olds) will start practices/clinic on Sat April 2nd, probably in the afternoon hours at McLean HS Stadium Turf or Bermuda grass field or Lewinsville Park Grass or Linway Terrace Turf, between the hours of 12pm-4pm. 6U Boys and girls will have Saturday practices every Saturday for 6-7 weeks (April 2 to May 21) and conclude their Spring season with scrimmages against other 6U teams.
Age-Based Programs — The age-based programs in the NVYLL are designed for boys from age 7 to age 14 (8U-14U). Practices are held one to three times a week with boys games on Saturdays and girls games on Sundays. These games are played throughout the Northern Virginia areas and Bethesda and requires travel.
For Boys, there will be four divisions -- 14U, 12U, 10U and 8U. Players who are under the maximum age as of August 31st, 2021 are eligible to play in that division. For example: A player who is 12 years old as of August 31st, 2021 is eligible for the 12U division. If a player turns 13 after August 31st, 2020, they have to play 14U for the Spring 2022 season.
Age-groups for Spring 2022 are determined by the players age as of August 31st, 2021 and their birth year.
Players can play up in the next age-group only with the permission of his age-group coordinator but cannot play down.

Practices and Games
A Team Tryouts will take place in February/March (will be posted soon on front page of mylax.net). B Team Evaluations will take place in February/March as well, see tab for Boys Winter Tryout schedule (will be posted soon). All players in all age-groups, except 6U, are required to attend the team placement evaluations or Tryouts so we can determine player’s ability and placement on the appropriate level team.
Practices for all 8U, 10U, 12U, & 14U players will begin in February into March, depending on weather. Practice schedules will be dependent of coaches’ schedules and field availability. After daylight savings time, the practice schedules may change. The schedules will be posted on this website.
Boys games generally are on Saturdays and will start April 2 to May 21, (OFF Memorial Day Weekend May 28). The playoffs will be June 4-5 & 11-12, 2022.
Playoffs are held for 10U through 14U age groups. The 8U age group will play 7-8 games April 2-May 22. If we have the talent for an 8U A team, we will try to form one.
Placement on Teams
The goal in placement is to foster growth of every player by providing an environment with teammates and opponents of nearly equal skills. Team placement will be based upon (in no particular order):
· Age group
· Athletic skills
· Lacrosse knowledge
· Stick work
· Level of commitment
“A” Team Commitment -
Players who want to be considered for an MYL “A" level team are required to attend at least one tryout in February.
MYL “A” Teams are for the more serious, experienced player, that wants to compete at a high level against similar competition. Historically, MYL “A” Teams have competed for the league championship at every level and we expect our MYL “A” teams to do so again this spring. While continued development of players is a top priority, we also expect to compete with the best teams.
Our team success will be in large part directly related to how much we can play together as a team. It is important that your son's make lacrosse a priority and attend as many practices before the season, and then throughout, as possible. We encourage and support them playing other sports and activities, but we do expect a high level of commitment to this team. If lacrosse is going to always be secondary to soccer or another activity, that's absolutely fine, but the top “B” team may be a better fit (it's less of a commitment). We also expect the boys to show up to practice and games ready to play, listen, and try their hardest! Fun will be a top priority and we will have plenty of it, but at the “A” team division, we are stepping up our lacrosse to another level and want the boys prepared to work hard accordingly.
Team practices for MYL “A” Teams will begin sometime in February/March, with a more permanent schedule beginning in March. MYL “A” teams will likely practice 1-2 times per week, with a game on the weekends. The weeknight practice schedule is based on coaches' availability and field space.
“B” Team Commitment -
Any MYL player that is not placed on an MYL “A” team will be placed on an MYL “B” team. Depending on number of boys registered, we may have multiple MYL “B” teams in which case they will be divided based on skill and ability (i.e. Upper B, Lower B, etc) and they will play in divisions with teams of comparable levels. Please note, we can ONLY provide teams if we have coaches! While we want MYL as many boys to participate as possible, in order to make that happen, we need to parents to volunteer to coach. If we do not have parents volunteer, it may result in larger rosters which means less playing time and less development. This is not ideal. We are taking steps to help assist those "novice" coaches in learning and growing the game, so you won't be on your own! If interested, please let us know, so we can ensure we have enough coaches for the number of teams needed!
MYL “B” are typically highly competitive teams based on the growth of MYL and the depth of our player pool. MYL “B” teams are regularly some of the top in the league and we expect nothing less this season. MYL “B” teams are a great opportunity for far greater playing time and touches throughout the season, which will give all of the boys a better opportunity to grow and mature their games and put them in the best position to take the next step in lacrosse!
If necessary, MYL may hold a separate or additional “B” Team-only assessment following tryouts in Febraury, to best divide and place players on teams.
Team practices for MYL “B” Teams will begin in March (February if weather and fields accommodate) and are typically held twice a week, one weeknight practice and one on Saturdays throughout the season. Boys Games will be on Saturdays for the most part, maybe 1-2 Sunday games. The weeknight practice schedule is based on coaches' availability and field space. The practice schedules should be available by Mid-February.
Club Team Conflicts (Potential) -
We recognize that many MYL players now play travel club lacrosse, in addition to rec league. This is great and we are proud of the pool of lacrosse players we have worked so hard to develop! That being said, some club players may have significant commitments throughout the rec season and at the end, during playoffs. We are aware of these circumstances and while we are hopeful and expect to be able to manage most of these conflicts throughout the season, there may be times where conflicts are unavoidable. For our MYL teams, we do not anticipate the NVYLL adjusting its post-season playoff schedule. As such, we expect to have an unavoidable conflict with those teams that make the NVYLL Championship weekend (as we did this past year). Unfortunately, given club team commitments, that could result in MYL teams having to forfeit the final championship round. We have worked hard to find to a solution, but sadly, the potential for this outcome is real. We want all families to be aware of this, in advance, so they can decide what is best for their family from the onset.
